Fans of Wrexham FC are currently involved in a campaign to save their historic Racecourse stadium. Built in 1807, it is officially the oldest football stadium in the world. If you’re curious about other football related longevity records, here are a few facts:

Sheffield FC have the honour of being oldest club in the world. The amateur side who now play in Dronfield were founded in 1857, five years before the oldest professional club, Notts County.

The oldest person to play in the FA Cup was Walter Hampson, who at the age of 41 turned out for Newcastle in the 1924 final against Aston Villa.

Sir Stanley Matthews was the oldest person to play top flight football in the English league at the ripe old age of 50. Sir Stanley continued to play for five further years, only retiring at the age of 55.

And finally, not something to be proud of, in 2003 Raymond Everest was sentenced to five years in prison for his part in a post match riot at Millwall. At 56, police estimate he is probably the oldest person to be convicted of football hooliganism.
