David Villa scored his fourth goal at this World Cup, in the 1-0 second round win over Portugal. Villa looks a pretty good world cup free bet to finish the tournament as the top scorer.
Spain have been lucky that Villa has been in such good form, as his strike-partner Fernando Torres has failed to perform since recovering from knee surgery before the World Cup. Torres has so far failed to find the net so far in South Africa, he hasn’t played the full 90 minutes in the three games he has started.
Torres was on the bench in Spain’s opening group match, the 1-0 surprise defeat to Switzerland, but returned against Honduras in the next match. Torres has looked off the pace and has been overshadowed by Villa thus far. His lack of form has contriubuted to brazil world cup odds being shorter than pre-tournament favourites Spain too.
The Liverpool striker had a injury interrupted season in England, ankle and knee troubles meant he came into the World Cup short of match fitness. Torres was taken off after an hour against Portugal, his replacement Fernando Llorente was much more affective and Spain scored within three minutes of the change. While coach Vicente del Bosque and David Villa have come out in support of Torres. It remains to be seen if del Bosque perseveres with Torres or starts with the impressive Llorente against Paraguay in the quarter-finals.
Torres’ club future is also far from clear, Liverpool failed to qualify for next season’s Champion’s League, resulting in question marks over the future of some of the clubs key players.
Barcelona would be interested in linking Torres up with new signing David Villa, Manchester City and Chelsea have also been mentioned. Despite a poor tournament, Torres is still one of Europe’s hottest properties.
