Last
week, our chum Ron Atkinson appeared on the very
entertaining BBC1 Johnny Vaughan Tonight show to
promote his new album.
No,
seriously. We can prove it.
You
see, Ron
has got together with various TV football
personages to cut an "album" of
standards. Ron himself opted to go the Sinatra
route previously trodden by his old mucker Tel
Venables. Gabby Logan and Ally McCoist got
together to record a duet of "Something
Stupid." Reports that Jimmy Hill
contributed a rendition of "Smells Like
Teen Spirit" were sadly unconfirmed at time
of going to press.
Here's
an AVI clip of Ron in
the recording studio, seriously in the
"groove". (Not recommended for modem
users.)
Ron
proved himself a game enough interviewee,
although the entire exchange with Vaughan proved
to be regrettably Ronglish-free. Still, we did
get a taste of the wit and wisdom of the great
man.
His
career:
"Everything
I've done, I've enjoyed - playing, coaching,
managing."
A
possible new direction for TV football coverage:
"I've
got a great idea for an alternative football
programme for after midnight where you're
allowed to say exactly what you think. There
would only be one show, but it would be a
best-seller. We'd all get locked up
afterwards."
What
Ferguson should say to Keane:
"Hey,
look, you. You better get yourself sorted, pal,
or you've got a problem otherwise."
Compliment
for the boy-band prat sitting beside him:
"If
you earn it, you deserve it - I'm listening to
the young lad here... he's obviously enthused
about what he does."

Vaughan, Ron and
boy-band prat
Politics:
Vaughan:
"Should we invade Iraq?"
Ron: "I think we'd be better off
invading Tie Rack."
On
tipping:
"Whenever
I go to the States, I take a bundle of money and
throw it in the air, because you tip him to go
there, him to go there, and him to go there. It
does my head in."
On
kissing a fan (Vaughan had earlier been asking
the boy band prat about kissing fans):
Ron:
"I've kissed a fan."
Vaughan: "Nice lad?"
Ron: "He was a lovely fella."
On
Diana Rigg:
"She
was fit, but I preferred the other one. Joanna
Lumley."
