Manchester United v Southampton
English Premier League
Old Trafford, Manchester
Wednesday 30 January, 2013
Manchester United are the heavy favourites to beat Southampton at home and maintain their Premier League lead. Mauricio Pochettino has his work cut out to get anything from Old Trafford in his first away game as the Saints’ manager.
Manchester United Preview
Old Trafford has been a bit of a fortress for United this season with Tottenham Hotspur the only side to get anything, making them betting favourites for most home games. The record of ten wins and that single defeat has been enabled by an attack which has scored 30 goals so far, the joint best tally in the league with Arsenal.
Injuries and Suspensions
Darren Fletcher has been ruled out for the rest of the Premier League season as he needs surgery to correct an ongoing bowel illness. Jonny Evans is the only other major injury worry for the match after picking up a hamstring problem. United have no suspended players or players away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
United are the heavy odds on favourites with Bwin at 1/5.
It’s difficult to have any idea over how the Saints are likely to play in this match. They have two wins, three draws and six defeats away from home so Pochettino may as well urge them to attack and try to take some points. The problem for Southampton has been conceding goals with 26 already this season.
Injuries and Suspensions
Emmanuel Mayuka is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia. Fonte and club captain Adam Lallana are both set to miss the match with knee injuries. The Saints have shown good discipline throughout the season and have no suspended players ahead of the match.
You can get 21/2 on a Saints win from Bwin if you think it’s possible.
Manchester United v Southampton Statistics
United have been very efficient at home and away this season after conceding a lot of goals that risked their title challenge. They have 18 wins which is more than any other side, two draws and three defeats. United have scored 57 goals which is more than any other team.
Southampton’s problem has been their defence with 40 goals conceded from all matches leading to a goal difference of minus ten. They have won only five matches all season but would take a ninth draw from this game as they are expected to lose.
Head to Head: There have been 53 meetings between these two teams at Old Trafford. It won’t surprise many to learn that United have the massive majority of wins with 36 compared to the Saints’ seven. United were 3-0 winners the last time these sides met in the league at Old Trafford.
United have been solid with two wins and a draw from their January matches so far. They will be determined to secure a win after they drew 1-1 away at Tottenham in their last game, which was a match they should have won.
Southampton will be confident because they haven’t lost a game this January and have only lost two in their last 13. They have draws against Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton so far this month.
Manchester United v Southampton Prediction
Considering United’s strength at home this season and the way they are likely to have felt after conceding that late goal at Spurs, it’s difficult to see anything other than a home win in this match. Manchester United 2-0 Southampton.
A 2-0 home win is a best price of 27/4 with Bwin.
