| Tim
Lovejoy is a young
pretender in more
ways than one.
When he announced
on an episode of
Soccer AM on Sky
Sports last
October that he
was going to enter
this year's Wars,
the reaction
amongst all and
sundry was
derisory. The
tabloids had a
field day.
"Death-Wish
Tim," the
Star started to
refer to him
routinely. Even
Soccer AM co-host
Helen Chamberlain
had trouble
keeping a straight
face whenever he
made reference to
his training
regimen in the
studio. Rumour has
it that Lovejoy
has bet heavily on
victory for his
opponent, Brian
Moore. However,
Lovejoy denies
this, stressing
that he's by far
the youngest
combatant this
year, and that
he's seriously
aiming for the
2001 title.
Sagacious
Brian Moore has
been a Commentator
Wars perennial
right from the
start. While he
has never held the
title, he has come
close on two
occasions. The
first was in 1975,
when he was struck
by flu the day
before he was to
meet Jimmy Hill in
the Final. Hill
subsequently
thrashed him in a
fight that didn't
even reach the end
of the first
round. After
seeing Star Wars
in 1978, Moore ditched his
trademark
elbow-patched
sports jacket and
slacks, in favour
of full Jedi
Knight regalia,
including a
fully-operational
light sabre. The
irony was not
missed by the
press, who pointed
out that Moore
spent his entire
commentating
career working for
the Dark Side -
ITV. Nevertheless,
Mooro's new guise
worked well for
him. In 1979, he
reached the Final
again, once more
against Jimmy
Hill. This time,
Jimmy defeated
Mooro through
judicious use of
his most lethal
move, the Hill
Chin-Swivel. |

John Says
Lovejoy
is as much a championship
outsider as the hapless
Trevor Welch. However, a
sneaky Lady Godiva wagered
at these odds could earn
you a handy payday in the
unlikely event that
Lovejoy goes all the way.
Verdict.
If this chancer gets anywhere in
the Wars, I'll eat my hat. Still,
you never know with newcomers...

John Says
Mooro's
combination of the wisdom
of his advanced years and
his Jedi Knight technology
and mind powers could see
him go a long way. He
ended Jimmy Hill's Wars
career in 1982, getting
sweet revenge for past
injustices by slashing
through Hill's chin with
his light sabre, severing
the nerve and muscle
structures vital for
successful use of the Hill
Chin-Swivel.
Verdict.
Mooro's an old hand at lethal
combat. Worth at least a monkey.
