| Dunphy
is a newcomer to
the Wars, having
spent the past
decade-and-a-half
adamantly refusing
to take part in
it.
"Commentator
Wars is a hollow
sham," he
wrote in a 1987
Sunday Independent
article. "I
will not mince my
words - it is a
theatre for
shameless,
sub-standard
lethal combat
between men who
are clearly past
it. Only one or
two combatants
rise above the
pathetically low
standard that is
the norm. John
Giles is one. Ron
Atkinson is
another. In my
opinion, these
great men should
form their own
breakaway
Commentator Wars
federation. Now
that, my friends,
would be something
I could see myself
being part
of." His
industrially
sharpened Poison
Pencil proved
lethal against
Morrissey. It was
the prospect of
easy pickings
against this RTE
minnow that
tempted him into
the Pit.
John
Giles has been the
most successful
participant in the
Wars since its
foundation in the
late '60s. He's
won the title no
fewer than eleven
times, and is the
current title
holder. Giles'
modus operandi has
changed little
since his Leeds
days. While other
combatants
generally carry
weapons with them
into the Pit,
Giles carries a
leather 1970's
FIFA regulation
football. He rolls
it towards his
opponent, and then
follows through in
classic
over-the-top style
to break, sever,
or amputate one or
both of his
opponent's legs.

John Says
Dunphy
may be a Wars newcomer at
the age of 50-odd, but
he's a tricky customer.
Even without the Poison
Pencil, he can cause a
bloodbath. He's bad enough
in normal circumstances,
but don't get him angry.
You wouldn't like him when
he's angry. Good value for
a wager.
Verdict.
Get in there now. If he gets past
Giles, watch his odds plummet.

John Says
Giles'
only rival for the moniker
Toughest Nut in the entire
Wars is Big Ron. Anybody
who saw what Giles did to
David Icke in the first
round in 1992 would have
to be mad to get into the
Pit with him. But then,
everyone in the Wars is
mad in one way or another,
so Giles still has no
trouble finding
opponents.
Verdict.
Tournament favourite, but you'll
only get short odds.
