They
might be worrying about the
effects of lost fixtures due to
Foot and Mouth in the boardrooms
of Croker or Lansdowne Road but in
the back lounge of Harry's Bar in
the square in Thurles, they're
counting their blessings.
The Pudding Lane FC committee were
happy of the break brought about
by the national scare and intend
to use it to good effect. The club
hopes to fully re-emerge from
their winter of discontent by
winning all their remaining
fixtures in the Tipperary Southern
and District League.
Affable Lane manager, and
footballing gentleman, Noelie
Power has attributed his teams
recent run of poor form to lack of
peak fitness among some of his key
players. You wouldn't expect a
gent like Noelie to name and shame
players, but Dangerhere believe he
is referring to Dinny Costigan and
Owen Dooley, Lane's lethal
striking duo.
Sources in Thurles say Dooley fell
off the wagon at the start of
December and was rarely seen out
of the pubs of Thurles over the
Christmas break. Costigan, on the
other hand, has struggled with the
reoccurence of an excessive eating
disorder, which has caused his
weight to balloon by four stone in
the last few months.
Power may have problems with
Costigan and Dooley but he will be
delighted with the impending
return of Walter Ryan. Ryan, the
enigmatic captain of the '96
league winning side, has not
played competitively since March
'98. His return to the fray has
only been facilitated by his
switch to the night shift above in
GMX in Stradavoher.
Off the
playing field the club committee
are at an advanced stage in their
preparations for the big night in
the Anner Hotel on the 5th of
April. This special once off
social to mark the centenary of
the birth of club legend and
Tipperary soccer great, the late
Bunny Lambe, promises to be a
memorable occasion. Members of the
Lambe family from as far away as
Canada will be in attendance on
the night as well as local TDs,
Michael Lowry and Michael Smith.
Who won't be attendance at the
Lambe night is under 15s captain
Eddie Coppinger. Eddie is spending
that week on trial at third
division heavyweights, Barnet. The
club's youth development officer,
John Ward sees Eddy's trial as a
vindication of the club's youth
policy. On a sadder note the club
was rocked by the news of the
death following an accident in
London of Colm "Clumsey"
Cooney. Colm played with the club
at all grades from the under 8's
up.
