Having watched all the games that have taken place, I would suggest with more belief we would have won a lot more games.
1 nil up away to Bulgaria, draw 1-1
1 nil up home to Bulgaria, draw 1-1
0-0 away to Montenegro
0-0 home to Montenegro
The first leg of the play-off at home to France. No ambition whatsoever shown to try score a goal. Sat back against what was proven to be a rubbish team, probably the worst French team I can remember seeing. Allowed them to have the ball, eventually they scored.
The one time we showed any kind of real attacking intent/tried to play good football was in Paris when we had no other choice because we were out if we didn’t.
On to this qualifying campaign. A good start by winning away to Armenia. Followed by:
3-1 win at home to Andorra. Ah yes, the minnows of world football. No, we won’t try anything out in this game. We’ll leave two defensive midfielders in the middle, just in case.
2-3 defeat to Russia where we finally got exposed for just how poor this system is. Players complaining about tactics after the game. Paul Green completely out of his depth. 2-nil down at half time, no changes, lets just keep playing the exact same way and sure it might work.
1-1 draw away to a rubbish Slovakia team. I don’t care if they won in Russia somehow, they were an awful side who were there for the taking.
I’m sick of people defending Trap’s system. The whole “well the players he’s not picking are not that much better or won’t make that much of a difference to the style of play” argument is bullshit. Nobody knows that until he actually gives them a chance to play and allows at least one of the CM to support the attack.
