It has been a while since Gilesy unveiled another of his litany of footballing sean-fhocail.

In truth, this is a body of work notable for its unfamiliarity to anyone but Gilesy himself.

Although Today FM marvel Tom Tyrrell remains the undisputed king in this area.

There’s not a modern footballer who doesn’t live by Tom’s motto: “There’s an old saying in football that he who scores next when it’s 3-1 can influence the outcome of the game.”

But Gilesy too has plenty of previous. Some meandering goalkeeping from Scott Carson once prompted:

“There’s an old saying in football – you can always go forward but you can’t go back.”

And slack Blackburn defending for Milner’s opener on Saturday inspired the latest in the canon:

“There’s an old saying in football – if the opposition fall asleep then you take advantage of it.”

Of course there is Johnny.
