Gary Neville believes that Wayne Rooney can become a fans favourite at Old Trafford again after the controversies surrounding the striker’s future over the past week.
As has been well reported, Rooney initially stated his desire to leave Manchester started, before changing his mind and signing a very lucrative five-year deal to remain at the club.
This has angered some United fans as they feel he has played with people’s emotions in a bid to get a more lucrative contract. Rooney’s views that the club wasn’t ambitious enough didn’t go down too well either.
Now he is to remain a Manchester United player though, they will have to learn to love him again. Something which Neville believes they can do.
Speaking about what the future holds for Rooney and the fans, the full-back said: “It will take time to settle down but once it settles down and time heals he will go on to have a great career and win trophies here.”
Something that will certainly assist Rooney is an improved run of form. After a disastrous World Cup, he has failed to hit the heights of last season so far during this campaign.
Those looking at free bets note that a run of goals and influential performances will no doubt help the relationship between him and those occupying the 80,000 seats at Old Trafford.
As for the u-turn Rooney made, Neville believes his team mate reached the correct decision eventually: “The right thing has happened for Wayne, for his career, for his life.”
Neville was speaking after the game at Stoke City yesterday, where Sir Alex Ferguson’s men picked up a crucial three points as they look to keep in touch with league leaders Chelsea.
The Blues are certainly favourites with tote betting firms to secure a second suggestive league title, but Neville, Manchester United and eventually Rooney will still have something to say about that.
