Wayne Rooney reckons Manchester United still need to be wary of Chelsea’s presence in the Premier League title battle, despite the Red Devils having a ten point advantage.
The England striker has struggled for form so far this season, but looked like he could have turned a corner when he scored two in the win over Aston Villa earlier in the week.
That result ensured United kept a five point gap open to Arsenal and Chelsea, who had looked unstoppable at the start of the campaign, are a distant ten points behind in the Premier League title race.
Chelsea spent £70 million to sign Fernando Torres and David Luiz on transfer deadline day and the addition of a top striker such as the Spaniard could kick-start their campaign as current forwards Didier Drogba and Nicklas Anelka have not impressed consistently and the Premier League best odds suggest they are heading out of contention.
But a return to form by Rooney could do for United what Chelsea are hoping the signature of Torres will do for their Premier League title bid – give it the real goalscoring boost to give them an edge of their rivals and anyone looking to bet on Premier League weekend games should remember which striker now appears to be in the better form.
“We certainly haven’t written Chelsea off. They are a big strong side and we know if anyone is capable of going on a good run then it is them,” stated Rooney.
“But we know it is up to us where the title goes and hopefully we can win it back.”
With Chelsea facing a tricky game against Liverpool at the weekend, United have the chance to open up more space between themselves and the current Premier League champions if they beat a struggling Wolves side on Saturday.
